COP26 is a once in a generation moment. To meet the Paris Climate Agreement targets, emissions must halve by 2030 to meet a 1.5ºC future, but DNV forecasts they will fall by just 9%, and that the world will already exhaust the 1.5ºC budget in 2029.
In this episode Mathias Steck - Service Area Renewables Northern Europe at DNV, is joined by DNV experts, Al-Karim Govindji, Head of Public Affairs Energy Systems, Hari Vamadevan, Senior Vice President, Regional Director UK & Ireland, and Sverre Alvik, Programme Director for the Energy Transition research programme in looking ahead to COP26. They’ll examine what’s on the agenda for the conference, what the key issues facing world leaders are and what outcomes we can expect from this important summit.

Floating offshore wind is an emerging technology with an exciting future – providing access to abundant wind power over deeper waters than bottom-fixed turbines. But how can countries harness the potential of this technology to reduce their carbon emissions and meet ambitious climate goals? In the second episode of our special edition documentary podcast, we explore two important aspects that will enable countries to move from initial pilot projects to wide scale deployment – technology innovation and policy support. In particular, we’ll hear from Jesper Moller, Head of Offshore Concepts & Solutions at Siemens Gamesa, and DNV’s Lucy Craig, Vice President of Technology & Innovation, about the key developments in floater technology and the wider infrastructure needed for them to thrive. Meanwhile, Sebastian Bringsværd, Head of Floating Wind at Equinor, and Stephane Cicolella, Business Integration Manager & Commercial Director at Eolfi (a Shell company), also give their views on the need for policymakers to create the conditions required to prove the viability of this potentially revolutionary technology. Floating offshore wind is an emerging technology with an exciting future – providing access to abundant wind power over deeper waters than bottom-fixed turbines. But how can countries harness the potential of this technology to reduce their carbon emissions and meet ambitious climate goals? In episode one of this special edition documentary podcast, we examine the vast potential that floating wind technology has as part of the global energy transition and explore the cross-industry collaboration that is enabling rapid progress to be made. We also address the challenges of implementation and some of the barriers that must be overcome if the potential of this technology is to be maximized. Join us as we talk to industry leaders at the very forefront of design, manufacturing, and implementation, including representatives from Equinor, Siemens Gamesa and Eolfi (a Shell company). From discussing the early headway that is being made in Europe, we also go on to speak to representatives from the Japanese Wind Power Association (JWPA) and South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Company (DMSE) to learn about major plans for the technology’s important role in South East Asia. To gain a holistic view of development and global implementation, DNV’s Group President and CEO Remi Eriksen, and Vice President of Technology & Innovation Lucy Craig, give us their input on how this exciting and emerging sector is giving access to new markets around the world and positioning itself as a major contender in the future energy mix. In episode two of this documentary, published on Thursday 25 February, we take a closer look at the specific roles of technology and policy in driving development forwards. Tune in next week. To conclude the tenth series of our DNV Talks Energy podcast, we look at the action that needs to be taken to accelerate the energy transition. Having spoken to many of DNV's customers throughout this thought-provoking series, here we speak with two of our colleagues. CEO of DNV Energy Systems, Ditlev Engel, and Vice President Technology & Innovation, Lucy Craig, provide their insights based on the ‘five calls to action’ in DNV's 2020 Conclusions report, part of the Transition Faster Together series. We hear how DNV GL is very optimistic about technological development, but less so over the role of regulation – with the onus on industry to drive change. We also discuss carbon reduction targets, and Ditlev shares his view that the long-term ambitions of individual countries will only be met through highly specific year-on-year commitments. Solar power has huge potential to be a driving factor in the energy transition over the next five years. In fact, Harald Överholm, CEO and co-founder of Alight believes solar could account for up to 50% of global energy production within our lifetime. In this episode Harald discusses some of the critical success factors of solar energy, including its low price, sustainability and scalability – all of which result in solar being one of the most accessible energy sources available for both the corporate and consumer markets. We also discuss some of the incremental advances in solar technology that are helping to reduce costs and boost demand from larger corporates, and the impact this has on the industry as a whole.
Finally, Harald describes the vital role of entrepreneurs within the renewable energy industry to bring new passion, vision and experience, all of which will help increase momentum for the energy transition. How can collaborative partnerships help sustain the rapid acceleration of the renewable energy industry? Scott Harden, Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft – Energy, describes the energy transition as one of the greatest endeavours since we put people on the moon and talks about the importance of global collaboration in helping to achieve this. Scott outlines some of the innovative ways that Microsoft are seeking to reduce their own energy consumption to work towards their goal of becoming carbon negative, and some of the exciting partnerships they have formed with other businesses committed to playing their part in the renewable energy transition. Finally, he touches on the importance of developing a culture for change in businesses that starts at the top – but doesn’t end there. He believes courage will be required by all businesses to help meet our collective goals. To find out more or read the transcription, please visit https://www.dnv.com/power-renewables/podcasts/

With the price of technologies such as wind and solar PV continuing to fall, investments in renewable energy are delivering higher returns than those in fossil fuels in many parts of the world. But will the financial incentive alone be enough to keep us on track with the Paris Agreement? Christina Sørensen, Senior Partner at Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, discusses why we need to completely rethink the network that renewables feed into, if clean energy technologies are to have an equal share of the energy mix within a generation. With faster policy development being critical to facilitating change, Christina also shares her views on why greater trust and collaboration between stakeholders is required – whether it’s policymakers, energy companies or developers – and why they should be thinking holistically about demand, as well as supply. What is the role of infrastructure in accelerating the energy transition? Antonio Cammisecra, Head of Global Infrastructure & Networks at Enel states that for every dollar spent on energy generation, the same or more must be spent on infrastructure, in order to adequately address the demand created by widespread electrification. Antonio passionately describes his belief that over the next 10-15 years, the energy sector will witness significant integration of renewables, but only with the help of technology and digital innovation. Additionally, he discusses whether current grid expansion and digitization efforts will be enough to facilitate the level of renewable energy adoption to meet the Paris Agreement aims. He provides his insights on working with policymakers to ensure the industry is able to fully embrace electrification and create truly resilient and efficient energy infrastructure.
